Originally, I wrote two separate melody lines on this one, so it was interesting trying to find a way to combine them.

For context, I think the song points to my own hearing loss, and my job as a college teacher...

Static fills my lungs today
Wings exploded in tape delay
I haven’t been this present
In all the years that I’ve been sirened
Emergencies are someone else’s
I haven’t been inured to crisis
The date says all my milk’s expired
Yesterday you blotted out the sun

I’ll get to your questions
If I ever hear your questions
I don’t think the meadow’s likely
I don’t think the bike feels ghostly
When I ride around in circles
You’re in flowerbeds of lightning
Can’t replay the dictionaries,
Can’t undo the sad electric drone

Falling fine and falling finer
Arsonists and ladder climbers
I haven’t been this cataclysmic
Since I walked through walls of crayons.
You can have the geometrics.
I’ll modulate the atmospherics.
You’ll collide with what I’m dreaming
I’ll be smoke and half-uncluttered
